Dangers of Lead Paint

If your home or property was built before 1978, there is a good chance that you potentially have lead based paint in your home or building.  Because Maine has some of the oldest homes in the country and these old homes are plentiful it is important to have this knowledge.  As long as the paint stays in tact and is not chipping and peeling it does not pose a serious health risk however chipping paint does increase the risk of lead poisoning.  Because of this, not only can this be a health risk but could also lead to legal actions against landlords from tenants.

Lead paint can cause a number of issues such as nervous system damage, stunted growth and delayed development.  Lead paint is dangerous to adults and can cause reproductive problems in both men or women. Decreases in sperm production in men have been noted. Lead is considered a possible and likely carcinogen. High levels may result in death.

Lead paint is dangerous to children because it tastes sweet, therefore children may put lead chips in their mouths.  Lead paint may be a hazard when found on surfaces that children chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear and loosen and chip.  Common places that lead paint can be found are the following:
  • Windows and window sills
  • Doors and door frames
  • Stairs, railings, banisters, and porches
